Planet gazing
[Posted Saturday, May 30, 2026 5/30/26 9:38 pm]

Here in the North Hollywood suburb of Los Angeles, because of light pollution you can't see many stars at night, but sometimes some things are visible.

This is a picture I just took of the evening sky facing west. The lower point of light is the planet Venus, and above it and to the left is the planet Jupiter.

I use a great android app called Sky Map which you can point at the sky and it tells you what you're looking at.

I think the fact that you can see something like a planet that is so far away with just the naked eye or a cell phone camera is really cool. And it makes you feel just a little less alone in the universe.

The Boys of Dungeon Lane Review
[Posted Thursday, May 28, 2026 5/28/26 9:30 pm]

Paul McCartney's most introspective album so far, The Boys of Dungeon Lane offers a glimpse into his early Liverpool years while maintaining the spirit that has defined his career.

Working with producer Andrew Watt, the 14 new tracks strike a balance between acoustic ballads and pop-rock. Lead single "Days We Left Behind" feels like a modern-day Yesterday backed up by years of hard-earned wisdom, and tracks like "Mountain Top" include elements like psychedelic tape loops.

Looking into his past, the song "Down South" recounts an early hitchhiking trip with George Harrison, while "Home to Us" is an historic first-ever duet between Paul and Ringo Starr. These memories are balanced by modern, romantic tributes to his wife, such as the song "Ripples in a Pond."

Paul closes the album with "Momma Gets By," a fully orchestrated ballad that reminds fans of Lady Madonna or She's Leaving Home.

The Boys of Dungeon Lane shows the ever-youthful 83-year-old Macca at his absolute best, refusing to stand still and proving his unmatched gift for making hit records.

New Paul McCartney album
[Posted Tuesday, May 26, 2026 5/26/26 8:00 am]

The new Paul McCartney album drops on Thursday Night!

Paul's been keeping really busy lately, between his guest shot last week on Saturday Night Live and his surprise appearance at the end of Stephen Colbert's last show.

The introspective Boys of Dungeon Lane is McCartney's first solo album in nearly six years. So far, the two singles released from the album sound great, especially the duet with Ringo!

The new album becomes available on line at midnight, which means on the west coast we get it at 9pm.

Just two more days to go! I'm really looking forward to listening to it for the first time as we all do together!

Mystery Shoes
[Posted Sunday, May 24, 2026 5/24/26 1:56 pm]

I found these shoes in my closet today.

The funny thing is, I don't remember buying them. They do fit great. I must have gotten them at a vintage clothing store.

Has this ever happened to you? Have you ever found something you totally forgot you bought?

Big week for changes in LA radio
[Posted Friday, May 22, 2026 5/22/26 11:34 am]

This has been a big week for changes on the Los Angeles radio dial.

First, last Monday, KNX-FM which had been simulcasting news with the AM since December 2021, switched to all sports, becoming the first all sports station on FM in LA.

It is now the fourth sports station in the LA area, along with KLAC 570 (half-owned by the Dodgers), KSPN 710 and KLAA 830 (owned by the Angels). KNX News continues on AM 1070, and also KNX-FM HD2.

Then, yesterday, with the sunsetting of CBS Radio News which happened today, KNX changed their top of the hour newscast from CBS to ABC News, ending almost 100 years of CBS news on the radio.

Since so many stations including KNX dropped CBS News a day early, we didn't get to hear the real last broadcast of CBS Radio News. You can hear that last broadcast here:
